Research Assistant - Waldomore

The library is seeking an enthusiastic, user-focused staff person to assist visitors in the use of library resources and equipment.  We are looking for candidates who enjoy working with people and are excited about history and genealogy research.  This is a part-time, 19 hour/week position primarily based in the Research Room at Waldomore.  This position reports to the Adult Services & Technology Librarian and also assists at the library’s 2nd floor Help Desk.  The schedule for this position includes regular Saturday hours. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Open and staff the Waldomore Research Room during scheduled hours

Assist visitors with research related to local history and genealogy

Assist visitors with using eResources for history and genealogy

Provide instruction in the use of both print and eResources through individual appointments or scheduled group workshops

Provide a timely response to email and telephone inquiries

Answer questions thoroughly and accurately

Maintain a contact list of other local resources and refer researchers to those sources when appropriate

Responsible for safeguarding Research Room and Archive materials from theft or damage; directly oversee the use of fragile and rare items and limits access to materials as needed to ensure their safety

Provide coverage for the Library’s 2nd floor Help Desk on a scheduled and as needed basis; provide assistance with use of computers, printers, scanners, microfilm equipment, library catalog searching

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience to meet preferred qualifications

Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications:

Coursework or experience with history research

Experience assisting adult learners and researchers

Experience with print literature searching and use of primary source materials

Experience with conducting research using online resources / library databases

Experience with providing assistance and instruction in the use of computers, printers, scanners, microfilm equipment

Knowledge or experience with archives and document storage/preservation

Part-Time Schedule:

Planned work schedule at the time of hire, Wed – Fri 1 – 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  These hours are subject to change depending on the needs of the library.
