The Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library is pleased to announce it will once again host the Women of Appalachia Project's Women Speak: An Afternoon of Story, Poetry & Song on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. The presentation is a juried performance of story, poetry and song showcasing women artists from throughout Appalachia. The event will be held online via Zoom. Many people have an image of an Appalachian woman, and they look down on her. The mission of the Women of Appalachia Project is to showcase the way in which female artists respond to the Appalachian region as a source of inspiration, bringing together women from diverse backgrounds, ages and experiences to embrace the stereotype – to show the whole woman; beyond the superficial factors that people use to judge her.
Appalachia holds a multitude of identities and experiences, and the Women of Appalachia Project’s Women Speak addresses the complexities of the region. The essays, poems, stories, art, and songs selected bear witness to the lived experiences of Appalachian women while simultaneously speaking against the narratives, says Kentucky poet and 2019 juror Savannah Sipple, author of WWJD and Other Poems.
